Dopo
la pubblicazione, nel 1979, dell'album Eve, The Alan Parsons
Project aveva ormai dato al pubblico una serie di album che lo
aveva portato a fama mondiale. Conseguentemente si sentì
la necessità di realizzare una compilation dei migliori
brani de The Alan Parsons Project, nonchè di quelli sui
quali Alan Parsons aveva lavorato come produttore ed ingegnere
del suono prima di unirsi ad Eric Woolfson. L'alternanza di musica
ed intervista ad Alan ed Eric avrebbe reso la compilation molto
interessante e l'avrebbe trasformata in un'entusiasmante "guida
audio" al mondo musicale di Parsons.

Records, 2 ARSP 9951, Italia. Edizione contenente 2 vinili. Fronte,
retro e copertina del libretto allegato.
Così,
poco dopo l'uscita di Eve venne pubblicata, per l'etichetta
Arista, la prima versione dell'Audio Guide To The Alan Parsons
Projects (da notare la "s" di "Projects"),
catalogata in Italia col codice 2 ARSP 9951 ed in America come
SP-68. Nell'album si ha l'alternanza di brani ed intervista,
partendo da A Day In The Life dei Beatles per arrivare
a If I Could Change Your Mind del Project. Costituita
da 2 vinili di alternanza brani/intervista (ma con copertina
non apribile) e con un ritratto di Alan ed Eric, in color argento
su nero, in copertina, venne pubblicata in vari Stati, Italia
compresa. Alla copia nostrana venne accluso un libretto contenente
la trascrizione tradotta in italiano dell'intervista presente
sui due dischi. Un dettaglio degno di nota è il fatto
che il retro copertina presenta alcuni disegni (in pratica proiezioni
ortogonali) del robot di I Robot, della piramide di Cheope
e di una testa di donna, quest'ultimi ovvi riferimenti ai concept
degli album Pyramid ed Eve. Questi disegni non
compaiono su alcuna versione degli album originali, sicchè
possono considerarsi delle rivisitazioni inedite dei loro artwork.
Poco
dopo venne pubblicata una nuova edizione dell'Audio Guide,
anch'essa catalogata col codice SP-68 ed avente la stessa copertina
della precedente versione, ma ai 2 vinili di alternanza brani/intervista
costituenti la precedente edizione, vennero aggiunti i 3 album
del Project pubblicati dall'Arista fino ad allora, cioè
I Robot, Pyramid e Eve, per un totale di
5 vinili in cofanetto. Il cofanetto venne pubblicato esclusivamente
come copia promozionale per DJ, quindi fuori commercio.

Nel
1982, dopo la pubblicazione di Eye In The Sky, una nuova
edizione, questa volta recante in copertina la dicitura The
Complete Audio Guide To The Alan Parsons Project (cioè
con l'aggiunta del termine "complete" e senza la "s"
finale in "Project") vide la luce, anch'essa catalogata
col codice SP-68. Il cofanetto venne pubblicato soltanto negli
Stati Uniti ed inoltre, ancora una volta, come copia promozionale
per DJ, fuori commercio. Si tratta, in pratica, di un completamento
della prima edizione dell'Audio Guide: ai primi due dischi
di musica ed intervista già pubblicati nel 1979 venne,
infatti, aggiunto un terzo disco nel quale con la consueta alternanza
di musica ed intervista si copre il periodo degli album The
Turn Of A Friendly Card e Eye In The Sky. Questo cofanetto
è dunque costituito da 3 vinili di alternanza brani/intervista.
La copertina di questa edizione è costituita da un'originale
fotocomposizione che richiama l'artwork di copertina degli album
compresi tra I Robot e Eye In The Sky.
Una
nuova versione della Complete Audio Guide, catalogata
come SP-140, venne pubblicata poco dopo: ai 3 vinili di alternanza
brani/intervista costituenti la precedente edizione, vennero
aggiunti i 5 album del Project pubblicati dall'Arista fino ad
allora, cioè I Robot, Pyramid, Eve,
The Turn Of A Friendly Card e Eye In The Sky, per
un totale di 8 vinili in cofanetto. Quest'ultima versione,
quindi, è la più completa Audio Guide To The
Alan Parsons Project.
Riportiamo
qui l'introduzione al mondo di Alan Parsons che compare scritta
sul retro della terza edizione
(cioè quella costituita da 3 vinili) dell'Audio Guide
ed i relativi credits:
"The
Alan Parsons Project was to be just that," its namesake
has said. "One project. But it soon became apparent that
there was scope to develop, and then it became the name of the
artist. I feel as enthusiastic about it now as ever."
Now there are six. And the dialog contained on these discs is
an extension of an audio guide that was prepared around the time
Eve, back at the turn of the decade. Since then, there was the
extravagantly successful LP The Turn Of A Friendly Card ("a
reflection of something that was going on in my subconscious,"
Eric Woolfson admits. "It's tied up with Monte Carlo, gambling
there and taking risks generally"), and the brand new (as
of the moment) Eye In The Sky. Two significant additions to the
work of Parsons and Woolfson.
The work is what the conversation is about. The work being the
music, the hows thereof, the placing in time, the creative development,
the technological advances...all that has gone into the Project's
Progress.
Alan Parsons entered the music industry - in a tape duplication
department - during a period when the potential for expression
and innovation on pop albums was being expanded as never before.
It was the second great production era in rock. The first came
about when men like George Goldner, Phil Spector, Leiber &
Stoller, Holland-Dozier-Holland and others were making brilliant
little explosions of pop. The second, beginning with Pet Sounds
in America and possibly Revolvers England, opened up new possibilities
for album-length explorations. Parsons, in 1967, had early access
to the wonders of Sgt. Pepper, was suitably awed, and set about
to "find out how it's all done."
The result of that decision, the days of splicing and dial-twisting
at Abbey Road, the movement from Hollies and Harley to Pilot
and Wings to Parsons' own Projects can be heard on these six
sides. This capsulized history to date is notable for a few reasons,
one being the opportunity to hear the voice of the normally silent
Mr. Parsons talking about the various stages of his musical career,
revealing heretofore concealed behind-the-scenes secrets concerning
Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Al Stewart and his own albums, tracing
a Project from formulation to completion.
There is also, quite simply a fistful of hit music: "Get
Back", "Magic", "The Air That I Breathe",
"Maybe I'm Amazed", "Music", "Judy Teen",
"I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You", "Money",
"Time", "Year Of The Cat", "Games People
Play"...There could have been dozens of others. What all
of this showcases is a rather impressive breadth to Alan's producing
and engineering talents, an ability to do post-Mersey pop, post-Roxy
art-rock, modern times lit-folk, progressive space music. One
suspects that Parsons could churn out convincing interpretations
of Latvian campfire songs for lute and drum-computer if he had
a mind to.
Then, of course, there are the half-dozen (five on Arista) Alan
Parsons Projects. From the fortuitous moment when Eric Woolfson,
who had the idea of creating an album around the work of Edgar
Allan Poe, offered Parsons his hand in commerce ("It started
as a business arrangement and moved into a creative one"),
they have made the recording studio into a most exciting environment.
Conjuring up the past (Poe and the pyramids), the near-future
(I Robot and Eye In The Sky), and seductive aspects of the times
we're in (women on Eve, gambling on The Turn Of A Friendly Card),
The Alan Parsons Project have continued to make aurally evocative,
appealingly elusive and musically diverse albums.
The studio, where technology and ideas can be merged, where abstract
images can be brought to artistic life, is a grand toy for grown-ups,
and few have tapped its potential to the extent that The Alan
Parsons Project has. This words-and-music mosaic is an attempt
to put the Parsons picture together, to annotate what is on the
record. As the tale unfolds, a few facts come into focus: that
Alan Parsons' skill and taste have touched the music of many
of the key figures in the evolution of British rock; that the
APP have constructed a series of thematic albums which have made
them an international success story; that there are many new
areas for their talents and adventurousness to conquer. The story
of The Alan Parsons Project is an amazing journey, and the Complete
Audio Guide is a map of their steps. |
"The
Alan Parsons Project avrebbe dovuto essere soltanto quello,"
il suo omonimo ha affermato. "Un progetto. Ma presto divenne
chiaro che c'era l'intento di svilupparlo, ed allora divenne
il nome dell'artista. Mai come ora mi sento entusiasta di questo."
Ora ce ne sono sei. Ed il dialogo contenuto in questi dischi
è un'estensione di una guida audio che fu preparata nel
periodo di Eve, prima del passaggio del decennio. Da allora,
c'è stato il grande successo del LP The Turn Of A Friendly
Card ("una riflessione su qualcosa che accadeva nel mio
subconscio," ammette Eric Woolfson. "Esso è
legato con Monte Carlo, il gioco d'azzardo ed il rischio in generale"),
ed il nuovissimo (in questo momento) Eye In The Sky. Due importanti
aggiunte al lavoro di Parsons e Woolfson.
Il lavoro è ciò di cui si parla nella conversazione.
Il lavoro in quanto musica, il come, la collocazione nel tempo,
lo sviluppo creativo, le evoluzioni tecnologiche...tutto questo
è entrato nello sviluppo del Project.
Alan Parsons è entrato nell'industria musicale - in un
reparto di duplicazione nastri - in un periodo nel quale le potenzialità
espressive ed innovative degli album pop stavano per essere espanse
coma mai prima d'allora. Era la seconda grande era produttiva
nel campo rock. La prima si ebbe quando uomini come George Goldner,
Phil Spector, Leiber & Stoller, Holland-Dozier-Holland ed
altri fecero piccole brillanti esplosioni di pop. La seconda,
iniziata in America con Pet Sounds e probabilmente con Revolvers
in Inghilterra, aprì nuove possibilità per l'esplorazione

Floyd, Paul McCartney, Al Stewart ed i suoi propri album, ricalcando
un Progetto dalla sua formulazione fino al completamento.
C'è anche, semplicemente un pugno di successi musicali:

un'ampiezza alquanto impressionante del talento di Alan come
produttore ed ingegnere, e l'abilità di fare post-Mersey
pop, post-Roxy art-rock, modern times lit-folk, progressive space
music. Un presentimento che Parsons potrebbe sfornare persuasive
interpretazioni dei canti di Latvian per liuto e batteria elettronica
se soltanto volesse.
Inoltre, naturalmente, c'è la mezza dozzina di Progetti
di Alan Parsons (cinque dei quali pubblicati per l'Arista). Dal
fortuito momento in cui Eric Woolfson, che ebbe l'idea di creare
un album attorno alle opere di Edgar Allan Poe, affrì
a Parsons la sua abilità commerciale ("Cominciò

Alan Parsons Project ha continuato a creare svariati album sonoricamente
evocativi, attraentemente sfuggevoli e musicalmente vari.
Lo studio, dove la tecnologia e le idee possono fondersi, dove
immagini astratte possono essere risolte in vita artistica, è
un grande giocattolo per adulti, e pochi hanno attinto il suo
potenziale nel grado in cui lo ha fatto The Alan Parsons Project.
Questo mosaico di parole e musica è un tentativo di descrivere
la figura di Parsons, di annotare cosa c'è nelle registrazioni.
Come la storia spiega, alcuni elementi si focalizzano: che il
gusto e l'abilità di Alan Parsons ha toccato la musica
di molte figure chiave nell'evoluzione del rock britannico; che
l' APP ha realizzato una serie di album tematici i quali hanno
avuto un successo internazionale ; che ci sono molti nuovi territori
