"From The New World" was the title of
a hugely popular symphony by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák -
Symphony No. 9
in E minor.
It would often
be played on
my father's
somewhat
modest record
player while I
was growing up
in London.
Ever since I
first came
into the
business, I
have always
fancied doing
my own version
of it with
modern rock
instrumentation
combined with
orchestra.
That is still
on my bucket
list, but I
have made a
start by
remaking a
song based on
the Largo from
the symphony
with a lyric
written by one
of Dvořák's
student,
William Arms
Fisher in
1922. The
title was
Goin' Home.
It won't be
the first time
many of you
will have
heard it. It
has been
performed by
many great
artists in
more recent
times
and an
instrumental
version was
immortalized
in a UK
commercial for
Hovis brown
bread which
has reappeared
many times
since it was
first shown in
1973.
Dvořák
lived in
America for
much of his
life, so "From
The New World"
was an apt
title. The
symphony
successfully
evoked
a connection
with American
folk music,
and in
particular
African
American
spirituals,
which Fisher
captured
perfectly in
his lyric.
Another reason
for borrowing
Dvořák's
title is that
we have all
been
experiencing a
very different
New World
in the last
couple of
years since
the
Coronavirus
pandemic began
to affect the
lives of every
one of us.
I also have
the excuse of
being a Brit
who has lived
in America for
over 20 years
and the fact
that most of
the artists
appearing on
this album are
American or
Native
American.
It has been a
genuine
pleasure to
work with some
great artists
on this album.
As well as
everyone from
the live band,
who have all
contributed,
both as
players and
writers, I
would give a
special
mention to
Tommy Shaw
from Styx,
guitarist
extraordinaire
Joe Bonamassa,
and my good
friend David
Pack,
originally of
Ambrosia.
James durbin
will be a
familiar name
to many - he
appeared in my
Art and
Science of
Sound video
series and
came very
close to being
a winner on
American Idol.
A new
acquaintance,
Tabitha Fair,
did a
fantastic job
on our remake
of The
Ronettes hit,
Be My Baby
which has
fulfilled a
career-long
desire of mine
to acknowledge
the work of
Phil Spector,
who despite
his poor
reputation in
later life,
had a huge
influence on
American pop.
My best to you
all,
Alan Parsons
